Checking in on some Surf City home grown surf talent, Timmy Reyes from H.B. who’s been blow’n up this year on the 2008 Association of Surfing Professional’s World Tour. Going way back to the old school days, Reyes was an instant talent back in Middle school at Sowers, opened the doors going even bigger in High School at Edison where he was a big time standout in the National Scholastic Surfing Association’s Open Season and National Championships. Even back then when I watched Timmy surf in his younger days he was always going for explosive moves that were pushing the limit, and I think that’s what separated him from the rest of the pack. Go big or go home must have been in his mind. He jumped on the hard grind, the world qualifying series and muscled his way to the top of the rating with some great placings. By
2006 he was surfing so impressive on the big show, the w.c.t. he was opening up the eyes of competitors and spectators a like, the judges were liking his solid fast radical surfing abilities and that pushed him into the top 10 in the world standings. He had some big time placings, like a third at the Rip Curl Search in Mex that some say were some of the best waves ever for a c.t. event. But then towards the end of the season a freak accident at the Lane in Santa Cruz, caused Timmy to blow out his knee on a floater on a good size wave and that was it for the rest of the year. The rehabilitation took over the next season as well 2007, which was a bit of a wash, although by the end of the year in Hawaii he did get the barrel of the year on the North Shore a twenty foot plus bomb at Pipe, and that was HUGE, Timmy was back and the knee held up in good size surf. On the c.t. in 2008 things have been good for the kid straight out of Huntington, three
ninth’s and an equal seventeenth have put him at number eleven in the ratings. In Fiji, at the last event Timmy was averaging eights a wave, getting sick barrels, in a blow out heat with the big boy Hawaiian, Roy Powers and almost made it to the quarters but had a tough loss in round four to Aussie shredder Taj Burrow. He’s back in town training, throwing buckets as you see in some of the Cal Surf Pix. Next up is J-Bay, South Africa, July 10th-20th a long lined up right with petal to the metal sections that fit’s Timmy’s style to a “T”and a place where he’s preformed well before. After that is the U.S. Open in H.B. could spell some thing BIG, no local has ever won but the betting stakes are high with just about anyone putting their last buck on, you know who. And the “Reyettes” Timmy’s personal cheering squad will no doubt be showing their love too. Oh yeah, I hear his new Toyota Tundra four by four, which is super lifted, and has
the killer camper shell on it too is ready for some serious Mexico trips! Fig over and out.
